Pre IVF Investigations

The IVF process is used primarily to deal with female fertility issues. One of the main reasons for this procedure to be used is any problem with the fallopian tube. It is also used when the sperm quality of the partner is low resulting in lower chances of fertilization. In such cases, a donor sperm is used to fertilize the egg.

Pre IVF investigation : Prior to commencing In vitro fertilisation (IVF) it is important that a number of investigations are carried out to gain a clearer understanding of the patient’s current situation and to devise a tailored treatment plan most appropriate for them.  In order to ensure that the chances of conception through IVF are highest, International Fertility Centre carries out the following Pre IVF investigations.

Ovarian Function test : It is important to understand how efficiently the ovaries are functioning to understand the proper chances of retrieving multiple follicles for the procedure. These tests are carried out using a series of drugs that vary from one individual to another and are also based on the current functioning of the ovaries. These tests are based on the levels of several hormones.

Evaluation of the Uterine Cavity : The entire IVF procedure is aimed at creating zygotes that may be placed in the uterus to cause pregnancy. Before carrying out this process, it is necessary to understand if the uterine cavity is free from all abnormalities.

The common procedures used to determine the health of the uterine cavity are Hysterosalongogram (HSG) and hysteroscopy. HSG involves passing a dye through the uterus and fallopian tubes and investigating with the help of X-rays. In hysteroscopy, a light and optic scope is used to assess the uterine cavity. These procedures are usually carried out at the end of a menstrual cycle and at the beginning of an ovulation cycle.

Testing for infectious diseases and immunity screening : Blood tests are carried out on both the partners to eliminate any chance of Hepatitis or HIV

Semen Analysis : It is necessary to analyze the semen for the health of the sperms, mobility and count before beginning an IVF cycle.

A mock embryo transfer:In order to ensure that the transfer of the embryo to the uterine cavity is possible without and damage to the intrauterine environment a mock embryo transfer is carried out. This mock embryo is capable of identifying any irregularities in the cervix or the uterus. A special catheter is used to place the embryo into the uterus. This is then analyzed with the help of a sonogram to ensure that the uterine cavity is healthy enough to house an embryo.
