Everything you need to know about Premature Ovarian Failure

POF – Premature Ovarian failure is a condition where the ovaries of a woman stops functioning at the age of 40 and experiences higher FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) and lover estrogen hormone levels.

Note that approximately 1 in every 1000 cases of women aged 15-29 years and 1 in every 100 cases of women between the ages of 30-39 may develop premature ovarian failure.

It can be referred as a condition where premature menopause occurs in possible two ways. A woman with POF encounters irregular menstrual cycles but has chances to become pregnant. However, a woman with early menopause does not have menstrual periods and loses the ability to become pregnant.

When the ovarian functioning stops, they fail to produce estrogen hormone resulting in obstacles in the ovulation process. This is why women with POF fail to ovulate. This inability to release eggs occurs due ovarian dysfunction leading to Infertility.

Why does Premature Ovarian Failure occur?

The causes of POF are unknown yet there are a few known causes of POF as follows:

  • Chromosomal abnormalities
  • Autoimmune disorder
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Eating Disorders
  • Less gonadotropin secretion
  • Damage to ovaries due to surgery, chemotherapy or radiation treatment

How to know if you are having Premature Ovarian Failure

The symptoms of POF are similar to those of a women having menopause and are typical of estrogen deficiencies.

  • Irregular Menstrual Cycles
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Decrease in sexual drive
  • Irritability
  • Vaginal dryness

How to Overcome Premature Ovarian Failure?

Premature ovarian failure usually happens due to the absence of eggs in the ovaries. Unfortunately, there is no possible cure to reverse this condition. It is not possible to refill the eggs that are gone.
