Tobacco Consumption, Pollution Cause Infertility Says Experts

Tobacco consumption, water pollution, nuclear exposure and excessive use of fertilizers like DDT are the causes of poor sperm count in men and infertility in both men and women says fertility experts.

It is estimated that around 8 to 10% of Indian couples are childless. According to studies, in 40% cases, both men and women are responsible for Infertility. In most cases, a woman is blamed for suffering from infertility. With the advancement of medical sciences and competent technology, “Even if the person has low sperm count, by using Intracyto Plasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) we can increase chances of producing baby,” believes Dr. Rita Bakshi, who is a senior IVF specialist at Delhi-based International Fertility Centre.

Dr. Rita Bakshi has been treating couples struggling with infertility or other conditions from past two decades with a success rate of over 80 percent. She said that childless couples now do not need to be worried about the fertility issues that they are dealing with. “With assisted reproductive technology such as IVF and ICSI, couples are getting proper treatment and explore their parenthood dreams at affordable costs.”

Smoking affects fertility in both men and women. Infertility rates are declining in India and globally as well. According a latest study conducted by Registrar General of India, it says declining fertility in India will reach a concerning level by 2020. Despite this, there are not many government hospitals in the country to help couples conceive. This is why many private run fertility clinics offered help to couples who are desperate to have children.

Couples who have minor issues related with fertility are recommended for IUI treatment in the first place, “One of the easiest and most cost-effective treatments for infertility is intrauterine insemination (IUI). It can easily be provided as it does not require elaborate equipment or complicated techniques,” says another fertility expert.

When all other treatment procedures fail to produce results, In Vitro Fertilisation, or IVF as it is popularly known, comes to the rescue of childless couples. IVF is the process of fertilisation by manually combining an egg and sperm in a laboratory dish, and then transferring the embryo to the uterus.

Couples who are career oriented and want to delay pregnancy and often take help from IVF treatment to achieve successful conception. “IVF treatment has become the most preferred choice of treatment after IUI among couples who were unable to conceive after six months to one year of trying despite having frequent vaginal intercourse,” Dr. Rita added.
